Commercial fisheries exist since centuries and provide some of the animal protein that we need. But IFSUA considers that some commercial fisheries practices should not be allowed. Below some aspects that IFSUA believes paramount for an effective commercial
fisheries management:

- Deep trawling and drift nets should be banned due to the huge impact that have on non-targeted species.

- The new CFP discard ban should never allow any kind of commercialization of discards. This measure should be only used to assess the amount of discards  and reduce them drastically in the future by appropriate actions.

- Fishing for big aggregations of vulnerable species (meagre, sea bass, gilthead sea-bream, dentex, white sea-bream...) should be completely banned and punished with high sanctions.

- All slow-growing and low reproduction rates species should be subjected to quota limits per vessel and month. These quotas should never be transferable.

- Sensitive spawning and nursery habitats, like river estuaries and closer coastal meters, should be banned to commercial fisheries.

- No log-book exemption should be allowed to any commercial fisheries modality.
